Habitat for Humanity of Taos is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Though the vast majority have no construction experience or building skills, volunteers are involved in most phases of construction. By working side-by-side with the future homeowners, our volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.
Habitat volunteers contribute more than muscle. Creativity, strategy, and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to the organization. With a minimal staff, Habitat for Humanity of Taos depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects like Family Selection, Family Support, Public Relations, Construction Skills Training, and Volunteer Services. We also offer volunteer opportunities in our ReStore.
We invite volunteers to help us build, assist in the office, work in the ReStore, serve on committees, and help with special projects that benefit the organization. Time commitments vary; some volunteers can dedicate every day of the week to HFHT, while others spend just a few hours each month working on projects or in the ReStore. As a volunteer for HFHT, you can choose to work as little or as often as you would like. All of these positions are a tremendous help that directly or indirectly result in the construction of simple, decent homes.
Our house sites need volunteers at all skill levels, from no skill at all to experienced contractors, and are open to volunteers wishing to participate. Please call the office at 575-758-7827 to confirm a date and time for your volunteer work.
If you can work, from construction to fundraising, we can use you. Please contact the office‚ Habitat needs you!
Our volunteers are not only local, but also come from all over the United States - and from other countries the world over.
Several groups have come as a part of Habitat for Humanity International.
MinorsIt is the policy of Habitat and Partners that children under the age of 14 not be allowed on a Habitat and Partners worksite while there is construction in progress. It is further the policy of Habitat and Partners that, while children between the ages of 16 and 18 may be allowed to participate in construction work, ultra hazardous activity such as using power tools, excavation, demolition or working on rooftops is not permitted by anyone under the age of 18.
If you have a group of minors that want to participate, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 575-758-7827. We can see about making adobes, working at the ReStore or contributing to other projects.
VolunTourism (aka Work Camp or Service Trip)Are you or your company, college or church group looking for a way to make a difference while creating a one-of-a-kind and lasting experience for your team members? Habitat’s unique program is being touted as “VolunTourism,” an opportunity for organizations to volunteer, while they have an organizational retreat in one of the most beautiful areas in the country. It’s not uncommon for our volunteers to tell us “This experience changed my life.” If you would like more information on this unique opportunity, please contact the Habitat for Humanity of Taos office at 575-758-7827.
Collegiate ChallengeMany college groups come and work on Habitat houses during their winter, spring, and summer breaks. These are outstanding groups of young people from across the country that give of themselves in order to build homes for our low-income families in our community. Call Habitat for Humanity International at 1-800-422-4828 x 2215 for more information.
Care-a-VannersFull and part-time volunteers that travel in their RVs and actually live at the construction sites as they build homes for our families in Taos. If you are in the area, please call to see if we have room for your rig. We can always use your help. Call Care-a-Vanner Help Desk 1-800-422-4828 for more information.
Global VillageFor a unique experience, join one of these groups and not only work on homes in Taos but experience the history and culture of our area. Call Habitat for Humanity International at 1-800-422-4828 for more information.
Church GroupsWe can handle groups of from 10–30 people at a time. Many youth groups come to experience Northern New Mexico by not only enjoying our amenities but by giving of themselves by ministering to families in need.
We work with all ages from 14 years on up, so, if your church has a group of young or mature people – men's groups, women's groups or mission trips – we can use you.
High SchoolsMany schools are requiring community service hours to graduate. We have been able to help many of them get their credit hours by working on Habitat homes. Not only do they get their community service hours, but supplement the trip with some education and fun, from a float trip down the Rio Grande to a tour of one of the oldest pueblos in the United States.
Local GroupsLocal groups and organizations are not only welcome but badly needed. Rotary, Lions, Kit Carson Electric, The Town of Taos, The Taos County Association of Realtors and many more have committed to working a day out at a Habitat site. The local volunteers are a vital part of our organization. Please contact our office and we will be happy to present Habitat for Humanity of Taos to your group. We can schedule an individual meeting or a presentation about what Habitat is doing. You may also call our office directly to schedule a work day.
IndividualsAll are welcome to participate. We need volunteers at the work site, office and ReStore. Whether you can pound nails, enter data on a computer, stuff envelopes or sort and sell merchandise, we can use your help.
