Homeownership
Building homes, building hope.
Habitat for Humanity of Taos places families and individuals in homes by focusing on those in need of safe, affordable housing. Through a partnership model, Habitat selects applicants based on their needs, ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to contribute "sweat equity" by helping build their home and volunteering in other ways. Once selected, future homeowners work alongside Habitat staff and volunteers to construct their homes, and in return, they receive an affordable mortgage, making homeownership achievable for those who otherwise might not have the opportunity.
Who qualifies?
1. Housing need
Applicants must demonstrate a need for better housing, such as living in unsafe, overcrowded, or unaffordable conditions.
2. Ability to pay
Applicants must have a steady income and show they can afford an affordable mortgage with low or no interest. While Habitat homes are affordable, they are not given away for free.
3. Commitment to Partner
Successful applicants agree to contribute "sweat equity" by volunteering a set number of hours, either helping build their own home or supporting other Habitat projects.
4. Income Eligibility
Applicants need to fall within specific income limits to ensure the program serves those who need financial assistance but can still manage homeownership.
5. Residency Requirements
Applicants must have lived in the area for a specific period, and be a resident of Taos County.
The housing application period will open once yearly through this website. Check back at a later date for more information!
