Home Ownership

Before reviewing the criteria for Habitat's home ownership program, please know that Habitat for Humanity of Taos is not an  emergency housing agency. 

Habitat for Humanity of Taos offers home ownership opportunities to families or individuals who meet requirements set in place by Habitat International. 

*If you are facing an immediate housing insecurity, check out Taos NEST for emergency shelter and support services or 211 community resource specialists.   

HFHT Basic Homeowner Criteria 

  • Need for adequate housing (unsafe, unhealthy, overcrowded, rent-burdened, etc.)

  • Ability to pay a downpayment, and monthly mortgage.  

  • Willingness to work in partnership with Habitat - (willingness to perform "sweat equity" hours, attend monthly home owner meetings, and help share your story. ) 

  • Decent and responsible credit including:

    • Bankruptcy fully discharged for one year

    • No court ordered debt

  • Applicants must live and work in Taos County for at least a year

  • All family members to live in the home must pass a criminal background check.

  • Income cannot exceed 60% of the median family income for Taos County as established by the Housing Urban Development 

*Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy in line with the Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Race, sex, color, national origin, religion, familial status, age, marital status, disability and income from public assistance are not a factor in choosing homeowners.
