Help us build in the future....Extend your support of Habitat for Humanity of Taos and make a lasting impact on families in need of a decent and affordable place to call home.
Whether you would like to put your donation to work today, or benefit us with a bequest after your lifetime, you can find an option that lets you provide for your family and support HFHT through our planned giving program.
What is planned giving?
Planned giving is a way of sharing your good fortune; and your time, talents, and treasures to help others. Finding the best way to give starts by asking yourself what you want to achieve and what makes sense given your financial circumstances. Do you want your gift to:
• Minimize the portion of your estate that goes to taxes?
• Be increased by using extra retirement plan income?
• Take place at the time of your death?
• Occur now so you can see the results?
• Keep your loved ones’ inheritance intact?
• Generate income for your family?
Strategies for charitable giving can vary as much as the individuals behind them. Using one or a combination allows you to act on the values and causes close to your heart while also providing benefits long after you’re gone.
It is a misconception that making a planned gift is only for the wealthy.
The truth is, even people of modest means can make a big difference. Strange as it may sound, a planned gift can be simple to do and cost very little. The most common way is to name Habitat for Humanity of Taos as a beneficiary in an IRA, life insurance policy, other financial account or in your will.
Every gift – no matter the size – is helpful.
What are the benefits of planned giving?
By intentionally developing a strategy using a combination of financial products and personal assets, planned giving allows you the potential to:
• Give more than your current income allows.
• Give an asset other than cash.
• Receive recognition or remain anonymous, whichever you choose.
• Pass your values and giving traditions on to children or grandchildren.
• Receive tax benefits.
• Receive income for a set number of years or for life.
Many supporters who hammer and paint and give financial gifts wish they could give even more, but there is just no room in the monthly budget. With a little creativity, planned gifts can allow generous partners like you to make meaningful gifts you may have never thought possible, helping to build decent and affordable homes for families in need. These gifts also often qualify for significant tax deductions.
Wills and Family Trusts: A gift to Habitat is a wonderful way to create a memorial that lives on and helps change lives for local families for years to come. Simply ask your attorney to include a bequest to Habitat for Humanity of Hall County in your will.
Gifts of IRA Funds: Certain tax provisions allow individuals to make distributions from their IRA accounts directly to a charity without recognizing the distribution as income.
Gifts of Life Insurance: Endowments through gifts of life insurance are among the most innovative planned giving vehicles and suit the needs of many different donors. With life insurance, Habitat is designated as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, which can be used to create a philanthropic fund upon a donor's passing, allowing their surviving family to continue their charitable interests. An existing policy can be transferred and Habitat for Humanity of Hall County can be named as the beneficiary. At the time of transfer, a current deduction equal to the net cash value of the policy can be taken.
Gift Annuities: You’d like to help, but need the income, or you may have a highly-appreciated stock that pays a low dividend, but you don’t want to trigger the capital gains tax. Whether funded with cash or stock, a gift annuity will provide Habitat with needed cash flow that may be partially tax-free!
Gifts of Stock: Do you have shares on long-term appreciated stock you may consider donating? You can simply transfer these shares directly to Habitat for Humanity of Hall County. You’ll get a full tax deduction for the entire market value, avoid capital gains, and do your part in helping to create stronger communities.
