Habitat for Humanity International is a Christian organization and welcomes volunteers from all faiths who are committed to Habitat's goal of eliminating poverty housing.
Apply for a Home

1. To qualify you must have a housing need.  Your current home is unsafe or inadequate.  You are unable to own a home through any other means.  You spend a large part of your income on rent.  You need to have a minimum income of $12,000 per year and make no more than 60% or below median income (see chart below) for the size of your family.

2. To qualify you must have the ability to pay.  You are able to commit to a long-term, interest-free loan payment of approximately $400-$450 (principal/insurance/taxes) per month in order to buy a Habitat home.  If qualified for a Habitat home, $1500 will be required as an earnest deposit which will be applied towards the cost of the home.  You will have some time to save this money before closing.  We will work with families to meet earnest deposit payments prior to closing.

3. To qualify you must have the willingness to partner.  If qualified for a Habitat home, we require that all adult members (18 years and older) in your immediate family be willing to work 250 hours of sweat equity.  Friends, relatives or co-workers can help you complete the remaining 250 sweat equity hours.  Your 500 sweat equity hours must be completed before your loan can be closed and you move into your home.  If you qualify for a Habitat home, we require you to attend programs to learn and practice budgeting, home repair, and maintenance.

4. You will be required to verify employment and other income, verify checking and savings account balances, provide a statement from your current and previous landlords, provide a current credit report and credit references.  Additionally, you will be asked to provide tax returns, utility bills, paycheck stubs and cancelled rent checks or rental agreement.

5. You must be able and willing to move your family to a different neighborhood to receive a Habitat home.

6. The qualification of families who will purchase homes from Habitat for Humanity of Taos will be done by the Family Selection Committee in a way that does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, age, handicap, religion, marital status or because all or part of the applicant’s income is derived from public assistance programs.

7. To qualify you must have lived in Taos County continuously for a minimum of one (1) year.

8. Applicants not qualified during a current year are encouraged to re-apply annually.
